Abelcine have a new blog entry giving a short demonstration of the advantages of the PMW-F3 S-Log upgrade. The difference is striking, particularly in the last shot. Well worth upgrading.
The upgrade is back ordered worldwide, till the end of January, but thanks to Videocraft I have their rental S-Log installed on my F3 until Sony’s back orders are filled.

Abelcine have posted an overview of the C300, along with the official RRP price of $15999US for the body only.
That puts in roughly in line price wise with the Sony F3, but the C300 lacks a 10bit 4:4:4 upgrade, a true log mode, and the dynamic range is about 1.5 stops less.

The 1.31 firmware for the F3 has just become available. Single Link-A 4:2:2 S-Log output with simultaneous HD-SDI monitor output with or with a LUT is enabled, as well as 1080/50/59.94P Dual Link S-Log.

Consumer 4K is arriving. Well not really 4K, the redefined by RED 4K, which resolves around 2.8-3K with a decent lens after de-bayering. All in a 1/2 CMOS sensor, so each pixel will be that much smaller with all the attendant noise and lack of dynamic range that follows. With cheap glass, higher noise and compression, it will be interesting what this camera resolves, or what your average consumer would even play 4K back on?

All of the currently available HD-SDI viewfinders are flawed in some irritating ways, be it the diopter, the panel, the build quality, the mounting system.
Here’s a new entry which hopefully improves on these problems. TVLogic EVF035W-3G.

Here’s a very complete technical run down of the new Canon C300 sensor.

Abelcine continue their video blog on the Sony PMW-F3, covering some of the new features in the recently released version 1.2 update. Tests to follow in the next edition.
My F3 is now being serviced, post Conspiracy 365, after which I will be testing some new gear purchases, the F3 S-Log upgrade, an Atomos Samurai and a very nice Cooke Varotal 18-100mm 35mm zoom.

It’s been a very long and hard six month shooting Conspiracy 365, and we finally wrapped last week. As good as it has been to work on such a long running project, I’m certainly looking forward to working on some new projects coming up soon.
One of those is For Evie, a short film written and staring by Rachel Jessica Tan of Pick Me Up Productions, to be directed by Rob Innes of Substation Media. If your interested in contributing, you can donate toward production costs via the For Evie website.

Conspiracy 365 has completed week four of eight in the first block of shooting out of three scheduled until December. Shooting with three Sony PMW-F3 cameras, which have performed very well, without a single reliability issue. Kitted out suitably, they can’t be faulted, and the image is just stunning. The same reliability can’t be claimed for some of our other gear or suppliers.
The AJA Ki Pro Mini has given us continual problems, with random lockups, recording interrupted, settings changing after crashes, and a generally slow and frustrating interface. Pressing record does not always begin a recording. Be careful.
Our Teradek has been a singular piece of junk. It has rarely worked, and never for long enough for a take. Rubbish. Soon to be replaced.
Videocraft supplied much of our gear, but has pretty much left us standing when it came to issues and timely deliveries. So much of our gear has not yet arrived, and often when it does it sits on a desk at Videocraft for a week or more until we chase it up. Not recommended.
Despite the issues, the rushes look pretty nice.

Abelcine have tested the dynamic range of the production model of the FS100 and have found some nice improvements over the pre-production model. Roughly 11.5 stop now.
